Abstract
The problem of other minds is usually posed around living behaviour: a face, a cry, an utterance, whose accompanying experience we cannot directly verify. This essay approaches the problem from an unusual object — the Gallo-Roman dodecahedron, a wrought bronze artifact whose maker's mind is beyond doubt but whose meaning is irrecoverably sealed. Taking the artifact seriously as a philosophical instrument rather than an archaeological curiosity, I argue three things. First, that an act of understanding directed at such an object is genuinely ambiguous between completing a process the maker began and ending one that the loss itself created. Second, that the artifact does not prove another mind on the sceptic's strict terms, but makes the sceptical hypothesis peculiarly expensive: to doubt the maker one must posit the entire apparatus of a mind while denying that anyone is home. Third, and most important, that the object's real philosophical work is not to answer the other-minds question but to relocate it — off living behaviour and onto the made thing, out of pure epistemology and into decision under uncertainty, and finally onto the standing question of whether mind is function or experience: a question the artifact does not newly pose but inherits, exposes with unusual cleanness, and cannot itself decide. I close with a note on method, and on the mirror the object holds up to any age that reads it, our own included.
I. A Problem and Its Downstream
Some philosophical problems are isolated puzzles; others are keystones. The problem of other minds is a keystone. A surprising amount of philosophy rests on the assumption that I cannot directly access whether there is anything it is like to be you — that your inner life, if you have one, is available to me only through inference from what you do and say and how you are built.
Before asking what follows from any object, it is worth being clear about what a genuine solution to this problem would require, because the requirement explains the object's peculiar force. A real solution could not be merely a sharper version of the old argument from analogy — the reasoning that you behave as I do, so you probably feel as I do. That argument trades in probability and never touches certainty. To actually verify another mind, one would need some way to detect or measure experience directly. But a method for detecting experience as such would be, more or less, a solution to the hard problem of consciousness — the problem of why and how physical processes are accompanied by subjective feeling at all. The two problems are joined at the root. One cannot conclusively solve other minds without solving the hard problem, because the only conclusive evidence would be direct access to the very thing the hard problem is about. Hold onto this; the essay returns to it, because the object we are about to consider turns out to be a sharp way of seeing why the two are one.
Suppose, per impossibile, the problem were solved outright. The consequences would not be confined to a seminar room. Philosophy of mind would lose its central standoff: physicalism, dualism, panpsychism, and functionalism compete in part because none can be checked against the others, and a genuine test would likely vindicate one and retire the rest. Ethics would feel it most, since so much moral reasoning turns on who can suffer — the question beneath animal welfare, contested cases of fetal or end-of-life sentience, and, increasingly, the moral status of artificial systems. And a certain picture of language, on which meaning must rest on public and shared criteria precisely because we have no private line to another's inner states, would be either vindicated or overturned. The point of rehearsing this is only to register the stakes. What follows does not solve the problem. It does something stranger, and I think more instructive: it shows how a single object can move the problem to ground where the old deadlock no longer holds.
II. The Problem Turned Inside Out
Consider the object. Across the north-western provinces of the Roman world, from roughly the first to the fourth centuries, someone made small hollow objects of bronze in the shape of a dodecahedron: twelve pentagonal faces, each pierced by a circular hole, the holes cut to different diameters; a knob at each of the twenty vertices. More than a hundred survive. No contemporary text mentions them. No two agree closely enough in size to settle a standard use. The hypotheses are many and mutually exclusive — a measuring or surveying instrument, a gauge for coins or pipes, a calendrical or astronomical device, a religious or ritual object, and, in a popular modern demonstration, a form for knitting the fingers of gloves. None commands consensus. The purpose is, at present, simply unknown.
This is the ordinary way to describe the dodecahedron. The philosophically interesting thing is what it does to the problem of other minds. In the classic case we have the behaviour and doubt the mind: the person is in front of us, acting, and what we cannot reach is whether experience accompanies the acting. The dodecahedron inverts this exactly. Here the mind is beyond any reasonable doubt — someone cast the bronze, spaced the holes, graded their diameters, filed the knobs, and meant something by all of it — and what we cannot reach is the content of that meaning. We have the certainty of an intention with no access to its object. It is the problem of other minds turned inside out: not "is anyone there?" but "someone was there, and I will never reach what they meant."
That inversion is what makes the object an instrument rather than a curiosity. It isolates a variable the living case keeps mixed. With a living person, doubt about the existence of the mind and ignorance of its contents run together and reinforce each other. The dodecahedron separates them: existence certain, content sealed. And once they are separated, several questions that are usually asked in a fog can be asked sharply.
III. Completion, or Ending?
The first is the question of intervention. Suppose I succeed — suppose I come to understand what the dodecahedron was for. Have I completed a process, or ended one? The question sounds rhetorical. It is not; it turns on an ambiguity in the word process that the object forces into the open.
There are two processes, not one. The first is the originator's: the arc of purpose that ran from conceiving the object to making it to using it in a world where its use was understood. That process ended long ago — when the maker died, or when the last person who shared the practice died, and the circuit of understanding went dark. I cannot complete it and I cannot end it, because it is already over. Nothing I do reaches back into it. What I can act upon is a second process, which the first one started but does not own: the object's afterlife as a question. Emptied of its context, the dodecahedron became something its maker never made it to be — an enigma that generates hypotheses, wonder, museum crowds, and internet demonstrations. The maker lit a fuse whose long slow burn they could not have foreseen, and it is into that burning, not the original flame, that any act of understanding now intervenes.
In that second process, understanding is genuinely both completion and ending, and which one it is depends on what the object was. If the thing was a tool or a sign — made to be used, made to be read — then to understand it, even eighteen centuries late, is to fulfil a purpose that was thwarted by the loss. A sign wants to be read; to leave it forever opaque is to leave it forever frustrated. On this description, understanding is a late kindness, a letter finally delivered after a long detention in the post. It completes.
But the mystery is also, by now, a mode of the object's life, and not a defect in it. Unexplained, the dodecahedron is generative: it holds many possibilities at once and sets minds working across centuries. The moment it is solved — it was a gauge, it was a knitting form — it collapses from many possibilities to one, and everything else it might have been quietly dies. That is a real ending, though not of the originator's process. It is the ending of the productive openness that the loss itself created. To understand is, on this description, to dissect something that was alive precisely as a question.
So the honest answer is that a successful understanding does both at once: it completes the thwarted purpose of a sign and ends the generativity of an enigma. The two cannot be separated, because they are the same act described from the two processes it touches. This is not word-play; it is the structure of what it is to interpret a trace whose context is gone. Recovery and foreclosure are one motion.
IV. The Disguise
There is a sharper difficulty, and it is where the originator returns to the argument. I cannot check my understanding against the maker's intention, because the intention is exactly what is sealed. And this has a consequence that ordinary interpretation — where we can ask and be corrected — does not face: a wrong completion feels, from the inside, precisely like a right one.
Suppose the dodecahedron was a sacred instrument in the calendar of some local cult, and I confidently declare it a knitting form because I can make it work as one. I have not recovered the maker's meaning. I have buried it — replaced it with a plausible impostor that fits the object well enough to satisfy me — and, crucially, I will never know that I did. There is no moment of correction, because the only party who could correct me has been silent for eighteen centuries. The gap between us does not merely resist understanding; it disguises the failures of understanding as successes. Fit is not recovery, but from the interpreter's chair the two are indistinguishable.
This is why confidence, in the case of a sealed mind, is always partly hubris. It is not that understanding is impossible — perhaps some proposals really are correct — but that the feeling of having understood carries no reliable signal of actually having done so. The click of a solution is generated by internal coherence, by the satisfying way a hypothesis makes the object make sense; and coherence is available to false explanations as readily as to true ones. The very smoothness that persuades me is the smoothness a good impostor would have.
V. The Mirror
If a wrong reading can pass for a right one, then we should expect the readings a culture produces to reveal at least as much about the readers as about the maker. The history of the dodecahedron bears this out with some comedy. In an age of engineering and empire, observers saw a surveying or measuring instrument. In our age of maker culture and craft video, we see a knitting tool. The object did not change. What changed was the interpreter, and the interpreter reached for the meaning nearest to hand in their own world and mistook it for a discovery about the ancient one.
This is the object's mirror function, and it cuts deep. The dodecahedron is a surface onto which each era writes its own preoccupations and then reads them back as if they were features of the thing. What we take to be a window onto the maker is often a reflection of ourselves. And this reframes the question of what the trace tells us about its originator. Our specific interpretations tell us mostly about us. What the object tells us about the maker is thinner but better constrained, and it lies not in any hypothesis about the object's use but in the fact of the silence itself.
For the silence is not a gap in the record. The silence is the record. But that sentence must immediately be marked for what it is, because the essay's own argument demands the marking: it is a reading of the silence, not a deduction from it. Undocumented is also what the trivial looks like from eighteen centuries away; and the rare; and the once-documented-then-lost. The silence is consistent with all of these, and nothing in the silence alone selects among them. What can be said with discipline is that among the readings the silence permits, one is best constrained by the object itself: a thing made in the hundreds, over centuries, across provinces, with evident labour in every example, went unwritten — and the reading that fits those constraints most closely is that it needed no writing, that it was so thoroughly embedded in living context, in oral instruction and tacit craft and practice too ordinary or too guarded to commit to writing, that documentation would have been superfluous to anyone who might have encountered it.
On that reading — and it is a reading, held as the strongest of several left standing, not the only one — the object's opacity to us is a measure of its transparency to them. It says: I belonged so completely to a world that that world was the only place I could be understood. And that world — not the object — is what is actually gone. The dodecahedron is the surviving edge of a vanished whole, and its unreadability is, on the best-constrained reading the silence permits, the shape of the absence.
VI. Does the Trace Prove a Mind?
Return now to the question the object was supposed to bear on: does the dodecahedron prove another mind? The answer must be given carefully, because it is "no" on one standard and something more interesting on another.
On the strict standard, no. Proof of another mind, as established at the outset, would require direct access to experience — and the artifact provides none. It gives the fact of a mind, in the sense that it manifestly issued from planning and skill, but it gives no access whatever to the experience of that mind. On the hard problem's own terms it proves nothing, and one cannot rule out with certainty that it issued from some process with no inner life at all.
But watch what the object does to the doubt. The engine of the whole other-minds problem is the philosophical zombie: the supposed possibility of behaviour with no one home, a system that does everything a minded being does while lacking any inner light. This possibility draws its force from a particular kind of evidence — live behaviour — because behaviour is just the sort of thing a mechanism could in principle counterfeit. A person laughing might, for all strict proof can say, be a very good automaton. The dodecahedron, however, is not behaviour we are watching. It is a decision structure left in matter: a frozen record of dozens of choices — why the knobs, why graded holes rather than uniform ones, why twelve faces at all rather than a shape that would cast and finish in half the labour — that cohere around an intention without disclosing it.
And here the sceptical hypothesis begins to cost more than it can comfortably pay. To maintain that the dodecahedron might have issued from no mind, one must posit a maker-without-mind: something that weighs alternatives, holds a goal across the long execution, and realises that goal in resistant material with evident care, all while insisting that no one is home. But at that point the "zombie" has quietly taken on the entire apparatus of intending. It has become an elaborate synonym for a mind rather than an alternative to one. The doubt has not been defeated; it has been made to smuggle in, under another name, exactly the thing it set out to deny.
So the object does not refute the sceptic on the sceptic's own terms — the bullet remains available to anyone willing to bite it. What it does is change the price of biting. Confronted with live behaviour, the zombie hypothesis is cheap, because mimicry is easy to picture. Confronted with a wrought artifact, the hypothesis grows expensive, because to make it work at all one must first grant the whole machinery of purpose. The scepticism survives, but only by paying for a mind it claims is not there.
One further asymmetry tilts the matter. In the living case, the zombie doubt at least does honest work: it guards against over-attribution, against seeing a person where there is only a puppet. With the dodecahedron the risk of error runs the other way. If I credit a mind and am wrong, I have merely admired a rock. If I deny a mind and am wrong, I have erased a person who reached across eighteen centuries — a person whose reaching remains reachable, whether or not it ever arrives. Arrival is not mine to certify: whether what I meet is what they meant is precisely what the seal withholds, and no feeling of contact can stand in for the certification. But denial does something worse than misjudge an arrival. It forecloses the reaching itself. Given that the costs are so unequal, and given that the sceptical hypothesis can operate only by borrowing the very mind it denies, the reasonable verdict is not that another mind is proved. It is that, here, doubt has become the less reasonable posture.
VII. The Relocations
We can now say what the object does to the philosophical question, and the claim is deliberately modest in form and immodest in reach: it does not answer the question, it relocates it — and the relocations are the whole payload. This is a species of philosophical progress distinct from solving, and perhaps more common than the official histories admit: not the better argument within a fixed frame, but the object or case that shifts the frame so that the old impasse no longer has purchase.
The first relocation is of the paradigm case. The problem of other minds has been built, since its modern formulation, around live behaviour — the face, the cry, the spoken word occurring in real time. But that is exactly the evidence a zombie could counterfeit, which is why the scepticism has proved so durable. Reground the problem on the made thing rather than the acting body and the sceptic's cheapest move becomes his most expensive one, for the reason just given. This does not refute the sceptic, but it suggests philosophy of mind may have fixed on the wrong central datum. Perhaps the artifact, not the face, is where the question of other minds should have begun — because the artifact is the case in which denying the mind requires assuming it.
The second relocation is of genre. The other-minds problem is ordinarily filed as a theoretical puzzle — the sort of thing about which one may suspend judgement indefinitely, holding it at arm's length as an elegant impossibility. The asymmetry of errors dissolves that comfort. If denying a real mind is a graver fault than crediting a rock, then suspension is not a neutral resting place; it is already a wager, and a poorly weighted one. The object thus carries the problem out of pure epistemology and into decision under uncertainty — into what William James called a forced option, in which leaning toward the mind can be rational without ever being proven. That reclassification reaches far beyond one bronze curiosity. It is the same structure that ought to govern how we treat animals, patients whose consciousness is ambiguous, and artificial systems whose inner status we cannot verify: in each, the demand for proof before regard is itself a decision, and not a safe one.
The third relocation must be claimed more carefully than the first two, because the object does not produce it. It inherits it. Notice that the self-undermining of the zombie bites only on a particular theory of mind. If mind simply is functional organisation, then the maker-without-mind, having been granted the full apparatus of purpose, already satisfies every criterion of mind there is, and the doubt nearly vanishes. But to one who holds that phenomenal experience is the essence of mind, the same artifact settles nothing: all the function is present and still the question of an inner light remains untouched. That sorting — functionalists to one side, phenomenal realists to the other — is not the bronze's invention. It is the standing structure of the debate, and any wrought thing, indeed any behaviour, performs it, because the sorting is what the disagreement already is.
What the artifact contributes is not the hinge but the purification of it. By removing live behaviour — the noisy, real-time, counterfeitable datum on which the debate ordinarily runs — it presents the hinge with unusual cleanness: all the function present, frozen in matter, examinable at leisure, with nothing performing and no one to interrogate; and still the question of an inner light untouched. The dodecahedron does not adjudicate between the two theories, and it does not newly pose their disagreement. What it does is localise it — it shows, in a single object, that "do other minds exist?" was never quite the real question. The real question was always "is mind function, or is mind experience?", and the other-minds problem has been that deeper question's proxy all along. Which returns us, as promised, to the beginning: one cannot solve other minds without solving the hard problem, and the dodecahedron is a peculiarly sharp way of seeing why — because it is the case that strips the problem down until the two are revealed as one question wearing two masks.
VIII. Method, and the Mirror Once More
Two things follow for philosophy at large. The first concerns method. The dodecahedron is an argument for a way of doing philosophy in which certain ancient stalemates are broken not by a new syllogism but by finding the object — the case, the example, the concrete thing — that exposes the question as malformed or misplaced. Much of the work here was done not by inference but by attending to an artifact until it showed that the standard framing had fixed on the wrong datum, the wrong genre, and ultimately the wrong question. This is philosophy conducted through the reframing case rather than the fresh deduction, and the dodecahedron suggests it can accomplish what centuries of deduction could not: not to win the old debate, but to move it.
The second is a caution, and honesty requires turning it on this very essay. The mirror cuts everywhere, this page included. I have described the bronze as a mind reaching across eighteen centuries and remaining reachable — as something close to a proof, or at least a near-proof, of another mind. But that reading may say as much about the age doing the reading as about the object. We happen to live, at this moment, surrounded by machines that produce wrought-seeming outputs, and we are anxious, as perhaps no previous age has been, about whether anyone is home inside them. Of course, then, we find the thought "someone must be behind the made thing" so immediately gripping. The Victorians read a surveying instrument into the dodecahedron because they lived among instruments; we may be reading a near-proof of another mind into it because we live among suspected ones. This does not cancel the argument. But it dates it, and it should. Perhaps that is the truest thing the object does to philosophy: it declines to let any era mistake its mirror for a window — and it includes, in that refusal, the era now holding it up to the light.
